Unfortunately, the weather was not that good for the eclipse...

The next time a total eclipse will be visible in Japan is in September... 2035! At this date, the eclipse will be visible from Hokuriku and northern Kanto.

If this is too far away for you, you can settle for an annular solar eclipse in 2012, visible from
areas such as the southern Kyushu, Shikoku and Kanto regions.

An excellent HD movie called "Total solar eclipse in Iwo Jima Japan. 22 July 2009 (HD)". With good comments in Japanese, from NHK. Also some great zooms of the sun-moon couple with amazing pictures of the corona.

And another movie taken from the life NHK program, with the usual woman with a stupid voice commenting images...

It is for this week!! On the 22nd of July 2009, you will have the possibility to observe a total solar eclipse in Japan. With a maximum length of more than 6 minutes, this will be the longest eclipse of the 21th century. Although the eclipse may be seen from anywhere on the main land, it does not have totality, and is only a partial eclipse from the north of Hokkaido (at 50%) to the south of Kyushu (at 95%); the eclipse will be visible at 80% around cities of Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. However, it will be total only on some Ryukyu islands : on the Yakushima, Tokara and Amami Oshima islands.    Click for detailed information
