Global rating :
This ryokan was founded more than 250 years ago. While the buildings look quite large and uninspired from outside, they reveal some nice old wooden constructions inside. Apart from the rotenburo, which is described below, there is also a rather large inside mixed bath in an old part of the ryokan. A stay in Matsugata-ya is strongly recommended, as the food is nice, too, and the price very reasonable; this place is an excellent base to explore the surroundings.

Size :
There is only one outside bath, which is reach by following the mountain stream behind the ryokan. The rotenburo is not very large as probably up to 10 persons only can soak at the same time.

View :
Located behind the ryokan, the bath is well hidden by the vegetation, and opens toward the mountain stream, which is about 20 meters away from the bath. Especially after strong rains, the stream can be rather wild and extremely noisy, adding a unique atmosphere to this onsen.

Modesty :
There is a small changing room - with a curtain as a door - next to the bath. Apart from the people walking toward the bath, no one can look at the people soaking there.
