Ratings   (explanation of our rating system)

Global rating :
This onsen is considered as one of the most famous in Japan. Its white water, in a remote location, is often seen on pictures and pamphlets related to japanese hot springs. Although the baths keep an old-fashioned aspect and the buildings are mostly in black, old wooden, there is an extremely modern piping system which bring (and slightly heat) the hot water from different springs to the baths. Although soaking here is pleasant, the crowd in the mixed rotenburo and the limited view were quite disturbing.

Size :
Thanks to the photographers, the outside bath looks huge on the picture. Unfortunately, its size is not that impressive, and worst of all, it gets crowded quite easily. There are also two very small segregated baths, and some larger inside ones. Note that one inside bath is cooler (37 degrees), has almost no sulphur suspension and a larger amount of gaseous carbonic acid: this water is coming directly from the spring, while the water of the other baths is slightly heated.

View :
Some trees and fences block the view, while buildings are seen on two sides of the outside mixed bath... Apart of the sky and the closest vegetation, no view...

Modesty :
Separate changing rooms and entrance make it easy for shy people to bath here. Furthermore, the turbidity of the water (lots of suspension) makes sure that even your towel can not be seen underwater...

Area :
With the nearby areas of Kami-kochi (hiking in a pristine nature), Norikura-kogen (famous ski fields) and Hirayu (onsen village), there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy all year around. Be warned that all those areas can be extremely popular - and hence crowded - at some parts of the year...
