Ratings   (explanation of our rating system)

Global rating :
A very old ryokan, isolated and with a huge rotenburo. On the paper, this place has everything to please guests and visitors. However, this onsen was a great disappointment. The buildings are really old, and unfortunately, not in a very good shape; rooms were built from late Edo period (from 1855) to early Showa period (from 1930), but unlike most of the old ryokan, the oldest rooms are the cheapest!

Size :
People walking down the path from the parking lot to the ryokan immediately notice a huge rotenburo. In fact, with its rectangular shape, it looks more like a pool. This bath is located in front of the ryokan and just next to the small road, which also means absolutely no privacy for bathers. Worst of all, during our visit, the water was so hot (more than 46 degrees Celsius) that we had to stay just in a small corner where the water temperature was just acceptable (but still very hot). Inside baths, including the famous Tengu no Yu with two large red masks of Tengu on the wall, are... as old as the ryokan, and obviously would need a complete reform.

View :
Pleasant view on the surroundings from the rotenburo... if it wasn't for those construction machines located about 10 meters from the bath! Certainly this ryokan could have some work down, but it probably would be possible to hide the equipment from the guests...

Modesty :
With the rotenburo in such an open space, many persons will see you bathing. At least, there as some segregated changing rooms... which seems even older than the ryokan).

Area :
Even though Nasu Kogen is located at the boundary with Fukushima-ken, it is still readily accessible from Tokyo - about 1 hour by shinkansen. Indeed, the area can get crowded, especially in summer when the heat prompt people from the capital to head for mountainous areas. One of the big attraction of Nasu Kogen are the onsen, located along the Volcano Highway (a pay road). Alternatively, you can also enjoy many trails in the mountains.
