Ratings   (explanation of our rating system)

Global rating :
Although located close to Shiobara - less than 10 minutes by car - the water here is completely different. Even before arriving in this very small onsen town, visitors will notice the strong, characteristic sulfur smell. Just above the hotels and ryokan, there is a large field where several sulfur discharges can be seen. It is even possible to enter the field and approach them, but be careful since the vapor coming from the ground not only is very hot, but also contains a potentially dangerous amount of gas. The Shirabaka ryokan is located very close to that field, and has a nice - although small - mixed outside bath, as well as two segregated inside ones. Since there is nothing to see from the bath, the main attraction is the yellow water containing a lot of sulfur suspension.

Size :
The bath has the shape of two circles stacked together; the size is limited, but 6 persons can still bath together.

View :
Unfortunately, the view is hidden by the walls of the ryokan, and apart of the sky, there is nothing to contemplate.

Modesty :
Although there is a mixed "changing room" between the entrance (which is just a curtain) and the bath, people will probably prefer to change in the nearby segregated inside baths, which have proper changing rooms, and walk the 10 meters to reach the rotenburo.

Area :
With mountain walks in the summer, a famous area for koyo in the autumn and the nearby Mount Hunter ski field in winter, the area is attractive all year round. Especially in autumn, the access via Shiobara Onsen can be really difficult, as long lines of car try to reach the place at the same time.
