For more than 400 years onsen have been exploited in Yuzawa. With a great number of ski fields located close to the town, traditional ryokan and modern hotels can be found everywhere. Unfortunately, the rotenburo (outside bath) are not very large, and no konyoku (mixed bath) can be found. Nevertheless, the large and modern Toei Hotel provide a pleasant environment for soaking in hot water after the ski, for example.">For more than 400 years onsen have been exploited in Yuzawa. Global rating :
Echigo Yuzawa is located in Niigata-ken, at the border with Gunma-ken, in an area that is called the "Snow Country" (Yukiguki), a name that was made famous by the Nobel Prize writer, Yasunari Kawabata, who described in the story of a geisha in the 1930's. The beginning of the book, "After passing through a long border tunnel, it was snow country", is a perfect reflexion of the journey from Tokyo to Yuzawa. Nowadays, with the shinkansen (bullet train), Yuzawa can be reached in just a little more than 1 hour from the capital. Even when only limited amount of snow can be see from the train in the Kanto area, after exiting from the long tunnel between the two prefectures, and arriving directly in Yuzawa station, visitors usually discover a completely white scenary.
Size :
With a shape looking like a square, this rotenburo of about 25m2 is fairly large, at least for Yuzawa's standard. Indeed, the town is quite packed with hotel, and there is obviously not much space left to put large baths! A large inside bath is available in the hotel.

View :
Located in the middle of the town, the view from - and therefore to - the bath is limited by walls to protect modesty. Fortunately, part of the ski field can be seen while soaking, which is especially nice in winter.

Area :
Apart being a famous onsen town, Yuzawa also provide some of the best ski fields in the area. Directly connected to Tokyo by the shinkansen, this place is literally invaded during the winter's week-ends by skiers and snowboarder from the capital. Not only the place is quickly accessible, but also cheap package combining train and ski tickets are available, like for the JR-owned ski field GALA Yuzawa, where the train station and the gondola are located in the same building, just separated by the ski rental facility! Finally, some of the finest sake of Niigata-ken can be found there. Don't miss the sake tasting area located in the Echigo Yuzawa station, where visitors can enjoy five sake for 500 yens only!
