Global rating :
A very famous onsen known for its mud that is suppose to be an excellent beauty mask for women. More than just an onsen, this place is almost an industry! There is a ryokan, a restaurant, the onsen as well as three parking lots. Fortunately, all buildings are not too large and rather elegant - this is far from the huge concrete cube found sometimes. Keep in mind that the onsen can be really crowded, as it is popular both for local people and tourists, and often advertised in Japanese travel magazines. They also offer attractive packages including a nice lunch and the onsen for reasonnable prices.

Size :
While famous for its mud, this onsen does not have a true "mud bath"; in fact, soakers cover themselves with mud - available from a small bassin - outside the baths; it is suggested to keep this mud on the body for 10 minutes, before rincing it. Rincing is also not that easy, as mud tends to stick to the skin... Therefore, while baths are not that large in the men's area, guests spend most of their time outside the water, so the size is not really an issue. There is also a bath with cold water. Women's baths are larger and more numerous...

View :
View on the buildings, which are not tall and rather pleasant to look at, and the surrounding trees...

Area :
Ebino-kogen Plateau is at the border between Miyazaki and Kagoshima Prefectures, in Kyushu. It belongs to the Kirishima-Yaku National Park, which was the first area designated as a national park in Japan. The highland is at an altitude of 1200-1300 meters above the sea level, while the Mt. Karakuni-dake - reaching 1700 meters - is the highest mountain south Kyushu. Ebino-kogen is a perfect starting point for hiking in the park, offering hikes to the top of the mountains or around volcanic lakes. If the weather is fine, you can have gorgeous views from the summit of the mountains. There are limited accomodations in Ebino-Kogen. Located more to the south, Kirishima Onsen is an alternative entrance to the national park - but from there, you will need a car or a bus to reach the hiking area. On the other hand, there are plenty of huge hotels and ryokan. Isolated Shinyu Onsen is also located in the area, but at a higher altitude.
