official web site of Kurokawa; although only in Japanese, provides lots of information including all onsen and ryokan (with pictures and prices, respectively) as well as a good map; in Kurokawa Onsen, you can find an excellent pamphlet with pictures made

We can't provide a nice view of this onsen... as we visited it at night - it is however one of the best baths we have seen so far!

Global rating :
This ryokan is quite far from the center of Kurokawa, and can only be reached by car (most of the inns will give a lift to their guests, so you won't need to drive by yourself). Rooms are located around a nice pond, in a very calm surroundings. Especially during the night, not a single noise can be heard there. There is only rather large and mixed rotenburo, while women have their own private outside bath. However, the bath itself is absolutely great!

Size :
Only one bath, but a large one... Apart of the river, the bath is also next to a small pond with clear water (but cold one): if you feel that the temperature is too high for you, you can always try to dip in that fresh pond!

View :
The rotenburo is located just next to a river, at about 50 meters from a waterfall. During the waterfall is illuminated, but the bath itself is mostly in the dark, giving an almost unreal impression...

Modesty :
While most women might prefer to enjoy their small, private bath, some could be tempted to integrate the mixed one. A small passage between the two baths has been made just next to the river (especially during the night, falling in the river from there seems quite possible, so be careful). While it might be more challenging during the daytime, the darkness at night should be an ally for women...

Area :
Kurokawa Onsen is a unique onsen town in Japan. Most of people who enjoy onsen get disappointed with onsen town, as all of them tend to have the same faults... however great the water is, you usually find yourself surrounded by huge concrete hotel; and even when old houses where kept in such town, they very often are surrounded by pachinko parlors. In Kurokawa Onsen, you will find no ugly hotel, no pachinko, no convenience shop and... no karaoke! Even better, there are almost no car in the center of the town and you can walk around wearing yukata. For those who have tried lots of onsen, go visit this unique place: you will not regret it.

Comment

Since we had an early dinner, we just had time for one more bath, and we decided to visit this fairly remove place. Fortunately, people staying in that ryokan where still eating, and we could enjoy the large, outside bath by ourselves.
